How To Use Pool Chlorine Effectively

By Odessa Edwards

Now that summer is fast approaching more and more people are buying their own swimming pools. Hopefully they are also buying the necessary treatment kits needed to keep these items in good condition. One of the most important chemicals that they will be adding is pool chlorine. Which can come in many different forms.

The easiest to use method of delivery is a 3 inch block or tablet. These are combination tablets and are designed to slowly release the appropriate levels of chemicals as they dissolve. This has the advantage in that everything is calculated out for you. Other forms widely available are granular and powder. If a person is using either of these, the quantity needed will vary depending on the volume of water held in the pool.

A liquid version is also available, but is not recommended for novices. Most often this is used by public swimming baths or professional maintenance concerns. Quite often you will notice that the public baths will remain closed during this chlorination process, this is due to the high likelihood that gases will also be in evidence. Remember that, as with all chemicals, to make sure that they are securely stored out of the reach of children

Almost everyone has visited a public swimming bath at some stage. So everyone will be familiar with that distinctive smell associated with these baths, this is the smell of the chlorine. This is the chemical used to kill off harmful bacteria in the water by oxidising it.

The difficult part is trying to get the correct levels added, if you make it too strong it acts just like a bleach. Even at the correct levels it still discolors your swimwear. Those with sensitive skin should exercise more caution as they might blister if the solution is too strong, or at least develop the all too familiar red eyes. So apart from the new equipment and chemicals a highly recommended purchase is a tester kit. The instructions for use are very easy to follow and give an indication as to the water quality.

To let everything properly, your water ought to have a pH reading somewhere between 7 and 8. If the reading is higher than 8, the chemicals are not going to be as effective. You ought to be aiming to keep a pH reading of between 7.2 and 7.6, if this can be achieved then everything becomes so much easier. Try to set aside a couple of times a week when you will monitor your water quality.

Another duty of this chemical is to prevent the growth of algae. As the chemicals are added to the water, they then become part of a whole system cleansing process. This is because they are carried everywhere that the water goes, so any bacteria or algae is neutralised wherever it might be found.

Within the arsenal of chemicals used to maintain good water quality, pool chlorine is one of the most important. Used properly it is highly effective. It is recommended that it's utilised in conjunction with a tester kit though.
