Tips On Buying Initial Pillows

By Estela Bolton

Initial pillows are a fashion forward trend at present. Everyone wants one in their homes where they are being used in bedrooms, on couches and chairs and just about anywhere else. They also make great personalized gifts that everyone loves receiving.

The fabrics used for making these items vary considerably. Burlap is particularly fashionable at present but many other fabrics like cotton, linen, cotton canvas and even felt are also used. As long as the fabric is of a good quality, the pillow should last. You want the original color and texture of the material to last for as long as possible.

Customers are given a choice of the initials they wish to use. They may select one from a surname, first name or a combination if they so desire. They are also often offered a choice of color and their selection will be guided by the reason for purchase. For example, if buying a baby gift they will most likely choose to have the initials in pink or blue.

There are a variety of different methods for applying of the initials to the fabric. Some of these are more labor intensive than others, for example hand embroidery and painting or stenciling. A method involving less labor is to cut the letters out of fabric and sew them on.

If using these items for decor purposes, the font style, colors and design need to be chosen to complement the overall environment in which they are placed. If you have a shabby chic style living room, a burlap fabric with an old fashioned design and a touch of lace complements it beautifully. If the pillow is to be used on the bed of a child, bold primary colors are appropriate.

It is better to select removable covers with envelope enclosures when choosing a pillow. This makes removing the cover for washing very easy. These covers often last longer than those made with zips. Zips break quite easily, especially when subjected to washing.

The seams of the pillow need to be well sewn and they are often double stitched to make them stronger. A pillow may be filled with a number of different materials and choice will depend on personal preference. Some are filled with down and others with synthetic fiber. There are those with hypo-allergenic fillings, suitable for those suffering from allergies.

These personalized items make very special gifts. Little scalloped covers made with white cotton twill and initials of the baby embroidered on in pink or blue are a great keepsake baby gift. Giving the bride and groom a long pillow to go on their bed, monogrammed with their initials and a plus sign in between is a great gift idea.

Initial pillows may be purchased for many different purposes. The cost varies according to size and materials used but it is worthwhile to get the best possible quality you can afford. This will mean that it will last for many years, retaining its original colors.
